Overview

Tortería San Cosme stands out as an authentic gem in Toronto’s vibrant culinary scene, nestled inside Milagro Cantinas at 5 Mercer Street. This cozy spot offers a genuine taste of Mexican tortas, delivering traditional flavors with a fresh, modern twist. The intimate setting—with limited seating at a counter facing the kitchen—creates an inviting, almost homely vibe, allowing diners to witness their meals being crafted with care.

The menu highlights several standout tortas. The Torta Cubana is a hearty fusion of adobo pork, ham, smoked bacon, and chipotle, layered with creamy avocado and house-pickled jalapeños that add a pleasant kick without overwhelming the palate. For those seeking something a bit lighter yet equally satisfying, the Torta Del Chavo offers a classic blend of mozzarella, refried beans, and fresh vegetables, striking a perfect balance of textures and flavors.

What truly elevates Tortería San Cosme is its commitment to authenticity and quality ingredients. Pulled chipotle chicken and southern-style cochinita pibil bring regional Mexican classics to life, while unexpected touches, such as grilled pineapple in the Torta Hawaiana, showcase a playful creativity that never feels forced. Refried beans, creamy avocado, and house-made condiments round out each sandwich, ensuring every bite is rich and vibrant.

The restaurant’s integration within Milagro adds depth to the experience, appealing to both Mexican food enthusiasts and curious newcomers alike. Although finding the spot can be a bit of a challenge initially, patrons reward their effort with flavorful dishes and a warm, friendly atmosphere. Beverages like horchata and a selective range of Mexican beers complement the food perfectly, enhancing the cultural authenticity.

Whether grabbing a quick, satisfying lunch before a TIFF screening or savoring a casual dinner among friends, Tortería San Cosme offers an accessible yet refined slice of Mexican street food heritage. Its target audience spans from local office workers seeking a flavorful break to adventurous food lovers who appreciate well-executed traditional fare in a compact, welcoming space. In a city known for diverse tastes, this tortería successfully brings the essence of Mexican culinary artistry to Toronto’s doorstep.

We ordered the La Cubana and the Del Chavo. I really enjoyed the porky taste of La Cubana (Roasted adobo pork, ham, smoked bacon, gouda cheese, , tomato, avocado & house jalapeños). Great Quality Food. Great and Friendly Staffs! Over all it was a great visit. It was just a little challenging to find the spot. It is inside MILAGRO.

At Person airport, i ordered the La Mexicana egg sandwich for breakfast, with a side of fries, it all came to ~ $20 cad, which is a bit steep, although not surprisingly for Toronto. But the sandwich was excellent actually, bun was fresh, and omlete egg was cooked perfectly and the Mexican taste was very delicious. I would definetely come back again and maybe try other options.

Went to their pop up inside the Milago Mexican restaurant (adjacent to Nobu) Limited seating, 5 stools at a counter facing kitchen, can't get more homier then this, watching staff cook your order right in front of your eyes. Ordered their Cubana sandwich and chorizo quesadillas Sandwich had thick char grilled pork slices in addition to the normal Cubana ingredients, ham, cheese, bacon, tomatoes, jalapenos, pickles, etc. Bread toasted with a nice crunchy exterior. Quesadillas generously filled with cheese and minced chorizo grilled on a flat top. Although I wouldn't consider a Cubana sandwich a Mexican dish, they pulled it off very well. The quesadillas were grilled well although I thought they were too generous with the cheese which overwhelmed the chorizo and flour tortillas. Finally found a Mexican pop up in a Mexican restaurant, I can cross that off my bucket list now, lol.

We got two tortas that were from here but through the Milagro cross-sell, interesting that that's how this spot is set up. The sandwiches were great and we were able to take them into TIFF for our movie. We asked for jalapenos on the side, which was a good decision in retrospect because it wasn't as spicy as usual Latin American food can be. We also had a horchata each and that was also great.

Great canteen inside of a larger restaurant. Pretty good sandwiches that are so well filled they fall apart when you eat them! The Cubana is very good and well worth it.

Great experience from start to finish food was fresh and came out fast. The bun was nice I was scared it was gonna be tough and chewy but I was pleasantly surprised. The flavours were beautiful. My only regret was the missing of pickles on the cubana sandwich. The churros were soft and more airy than I typically like but all and all it was a great meal. Definitely grab some house pickles jars and carrots! Limited seating
